This vibrant place is a cultural blend of museums, bazaars, minarets, mosques, churches, palaces, and restaurants, offering something for everyone.
Your first stop will be the Hippodrome. This ancient arena was once the center of Byzantine public life, with chariot races and significant monuments, including:
– The Obelisk of Theodosius
– The Bronze Serpentine Column
– The Column of Constantine
Next, you’ll visit the Hagia Sophia Grand Mosque, once known as the Church of Divine Wisdom. It’s one of the finest examples of Byzantine architecture and was, for 1,000 years, the largest church in the world, adorned with breath-taking 6th-century golden mosaics. Today, it stands as a mosque, symbolizing Istanbul’s layered history.
Lunch break at 1:00 PM.
In the afternoon, you’ll explore the Basilica Cistern. Commissioned by Emperor Justinian and completed in 532, this subterranean structure is the largest surviving Byzantine cistern in Istanbul. Its 336 columns, many salvaged from ancient temples, are beautifully carved. The cool, spacious interior is a perfect retreat, especially on warm summer days.
Next, you’ll head to the Grand Covered Bazaar. This labyrinth of streets and passages houses over 4,000 shops, each focused on a particular trade. From goldsmiths and carpet sellers to Turkish arts and crafts, you’ll discover treasures like hand-painted ceramics, hand-honed copperware, brassware, onyx items, and meerschaum pipes.

Day 11: ISTANBUL GOLDEN HORN & BALAT AREA TOUR WED, 15 OCT 2025

Next, you’ll see the Golden Horn. As a natural and highly secure harbor, the Golden Horn has played a vital role in
Istanbul’s development as a center for trade and culture.
St. Stephen Bulgarian Church: This unique church was established in Istanbul in 1871, though it was originally built in Vienna from cast iron. The church was transported in 100 separate pieces down the Danube River before being bolted together on-site. Despite multiple restorations, St. Stephen’s still stands beautifully as a testament to 19th-century architecture. After your visit, you may want to head to Eminonu to try one of the fresh seafood restaurants located beneath the iconic Galata Bridge.
Afternoon: In the afternoon, you’ll continue to the Chora Church (Kariye Museum/Mosque), known as one of the most beautiful examples of Byzantine architecture, situated in Istanbul’s Edirnekapi district. Converted to a mosque in the 16th century, it was later secularized as a museum in 1948. Inside, you’ll find remarkable mosaics and frescoes that showcase the intricate beauty of Byzantine art.
